Our stables are currently home to two ponies, September (shown on the left, with a chicken friend) and Bugsy.
September, who is just over 7 years old came to the shelter when his mum, Pixie, was still pregnant with him. Pixie was previously being used for breeding and, having served her purpose, was going to be fed to the fox-hounds!
She was rescued and brought to the shelter, where she gave birth to September not long after. Pixie is, unfortunately, no longer with us.

Bugsy is a Shetland Pony who we brought to the shelter after his lady owner died, and her husband did not want to look after him.
Unfortunately, Bugsy was not in a very good condition when we picked him up on 22 September 2007. He was terribly underweight - his ribs were clearly visible - and was also suffering with worms, which is what makes his belly look so round and full in this photo!
Poor Bugsy's hooves were overgrown, making it very uncomfortable for him to walk on. After a few visits from a local farrier, Bugsy's hooves were back to normal size, and he could trot around with ease.
Bugsy seems to have settled in well at the shelter, and has proved to be a good companion for September, who had been feeling a bit lonely since the passing of our mare, Carla.

And, on 28 November 2007, September and Bugsy were joined by Chocolate Muffin, the donkey!! She was due to be sold off for meat, but the staff and customers of local bakery, The Oven Door of Fair Oak, stepped in and raised enough money to be able to buy her themselves. She was named Chocolate Muffin by Ros and Jason, the owners of The Oven Door.
Poor Choc is also in need of some TLC. Like Bugsy, her hooves are very overgrown, and cause her trouble to walk on.
Bugsy, September and Chocolate Muffin are available for sponsorship for only £10, this will help us to cover the cost of necessary treatment, as well as his food and bedding. In return, we will send you a special Sponsorship Certificate, with a colour photo, and a letter telling you all about their progress! Click here for more information on Sponsorship.
